Youssef Nabil's third solo exhibition, "I will go to Paradise" at The Third Line refers to a misplaced nostalgia of a past era in his signature re-appropriation of the hand colouring technique of black and white photographs.
I will go to Paradise encapsulates loose references to selected moments from the artist’s life. Nabil views his life as a movie and the captured images are certainly cinematic in their compositions and allusions to narrative.
Growing up in the city of Cairo, the birth place of Middle Eastern cinema, Nabil was intrigued with the golden age of its magic and glamour. His works draws inspiration from his childhood memories of black and white films filled with elegance and melodrama, but also follow a clear lineage of the tradition of the studio photograph. Through using the age old technique of hand coloured photographs, Nabil constructs scenes that are both beautiful and conflicting, creating images of longing, loss, sensuality, sex and death.

Richard Allenby-Pratt, better known for glossy ad campaigns, has stayed closer to home with his latest set of pictures. Residing in an area of older villas just next to the open beach, he has made a series of images depicting the neighbourhood around him.
In a city where the paint is barely dry in most places, these pictures take a detailed look at the way this particular urban environment has matured with time; how humanity has imprinted itself through adaptation, adornment and self-expression; and how neglect has added a further textural layer.
The pictures are presented as large-scale prints on simple wooden screens in an area of disused land adjacent to the beach, between a sand volleyball court and a dilapidated dhow. Anyone visiting the beach will be free to take a minute to wander around the pictures and maybe, by so doing, be encouraged to take a walk around the neighbourhood and appreciate it’s unique atmosphere; and its’ significance in the greater Dubai landscape.
Exhibition dates: 16th - 29th March
Opening: 21st March, 2pm (bring along a picnic)
